A more constant scale ruler in the app
-
I would like to suggest a map scale ruler that did not change as soon as the user zoom a bit in or zoom a bit out. By 'map scale ruler' I mean the ruler showing distance units. [I don't know if this is the correct name. English is not my native language.]
In the app the ruler take up only 20-30% of the screen width and appears with one of two patterns: white-black or white-black-white, while the unit changes from 6 meter to 1200 km. This means that in unfamiliar landscapes you will very soon loose any sense of scale. You are only able to reestablish scale if you read the indeed very small numbers on the map ruler. A scale ruler with a less changing appearance could inform the user about the current zoom level without any need to read small numbers on an ever changing ruler. An optional alternative ruler should have a constant appearance relative to the base map. The ruler should have constant distance markings and possibly color changes according to a pseudo-logarithmic scale like: 5m, 10m, 20m, 50m, 100m, 200m, 500m, 1000m, 2km, 5km, 10km, 20km, 50km 100km, 200km, 500km, 1000km, 2000km, 5000km.
At the closest zoom in the ruler could show markings: 5m, 10m, 20m, 50m.
As you zoom out the ruler should remain constant. If the map and the ruler is zoomed out to say:
5m, 10m, 20m, 50m, 100m, 200m, 500m, 1000m, 2km, 5km, the first marker levels are obviously very narrow and will appear grey and not black-white. Only markings 200m, 500m, 1000m, 2km, 5km should be shown.I hope this suggestion make sense. Some work on graphical layout may be needed to make an efficient alternative ruler. By the way, did I forget to tell how much I enjoy using mapy.cz.

@stupid Hi, thanks a lot for the thoughtful suggestion.
You’re right that the current scale bar is adaptive (it changes both length and units with zoom).
At the moment, Mapy.com uses the dynamic scale mainly to keep the UI clean and avoid clutter at very different zoom levels, but we can see the benefit of having a more consistent visual reference.
I’ll pass your suggestion on to the team for consideration.
And thanks for the kind words - we’re glad you enjoy using Mapy.com. -
@stupid Oh! I almost forgot - you can measure distance in the app using two fingers (just place them on the map
), which can help you with distance orientation. -
@Ewelina Thank you. Yes I also use the two finger method and it's a good option though less intuitive than a 'more constant appearance' of the map ruler.
