While hiking I would like to use the mapy-app on a color e-reader. This would reduce power consumption for map reading and instead of relying on GPS I would rely on a compass in combination with the map. The reason for this step backwards in technology: I would like my life to be less reliant on smartphone and GPS and as an added benefit I would refresh basic navigation skills from my childhood.

In my use-case I would like to use the map as a "fixed map" on screen while hiking. Here a quick update is not important because the main purpose is to save battery during long hikes. I would only have to change the "fixed map" for each 5 km (depending on the size of the e-reader and the map-zoom needed for the specific terrain). My idea is to try out a 6'' e-reader with android OS.

In general, smooth map interaction requires around 60 FPS, which e-readers cannot provide by design.
